NEWARK, N.J. - Kevin Kline and the New York Rangers refused to give up, even when they faced a two-goal deficit midway through the third period.Persistence paid off with a 4-3 overtime victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.Klein scored 2:42 into overtime, and the Rangers extended their winning streak to three. We never got down, Klein said. We knew we could come back. We kept pushing forward, scrapping for the puck. The Rangers, who trailed 3-1, also got goals from Chris Kreider, Chris Mueller and Rick Nash, who netted his NHL-best eighth goal. He has scored in all but one of New Yorks seven games this season. On the winner, Mueller and Kreider crisscrossed in the Devils zone before Kreider fed Klein for his first of the season.Kleins goal was also the first scored this season by a Rangers defenceman. He made a great pass to me, and I was fortunate to score the goal, Klein said.Henrik Lundqvist stopped 28 shots for the Rangers (4-3).I like the way were playing, Lundqvist said. We responded tonight in a big way.The Devils (3-2-1) got power-play goals from Jaromir Jagr, Adam Henrique and Jon Merrill but it wasnt enough to prevent a third straight defeat. Cory Schneider made 21 saves.Kreider and Jagr traded power-play goals in the opening period.New Jersey started strong and pressed the attack during an early power play. Henrique, Mike Cammalleri and Patrik Elias had good scoring chances denied by Lundqvist. With Jagr in the penalty box for hooking, Kreider buried the rebound of Ryan McDonaghs point shot at 7:34. It was the Rangers first power-play goal of the season, ending an 0-for-17 drought through the first six games.Kreider was then whistled for hooking, setting the stage for Jagrs goal at 13:40. Damien Brunner fired a shot that sailed wide right of the net, and bounced off the lively backboards right onto Jagrs stick. The 42-year-old former Rangers star knocked in his first goal of the season, the 706th of his career. The Devils power play clicked again in the second period when Henrique, playing in his 200th NHL game, made it 2-1.Jagr set up Henrique, who beat Lundqvist to the short side from the left faceoff dot at 14:55.The Devils special teams play was excellent in the middle period as Elias came close to scoring on a short-handed breakaway.Merrill added the Devils third power-play goal with a blast from the right point 36 seconds into the third period.New York scored the next two to erase its deficit. Its real good to scrounge your way back and win it in overtime against a good team, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. We just stayed with it.The Rangers got within 3-2 at 9:06 as Mueller one-timed a cross-ice pass from Derick Brassard.Nash pulled the Rangers even with 5:28 remaining in regulation, backhanding the rebound of Kevin Hayes shot past Schneider. Devils defenceman Marek Zidlicky set up the goal with a poor clearing attempt deep in his own zone.We made a bad decision with the puck, and the game is tied, Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. A guy like Nash will make you pay for it. It was a hard-fought game but we lost. The Devils did earn a point, but came away feeling they let one get away.We should have been able to close it out, Cammalleri said. We did a lot of nice things, but we let the Rangers come back and grab it.NOTES: Rangers D Dan Girardi, listed as day to day after sustaining a gash while blocking a shot during a win over San Jose on Sunday, was in the starting lineup. ... There was a time not long ago where the Montreal Impact looked like Supporters Shield contenders - they were leading the Eastern Conference with games in hand and looked to be coasting towards the MLS playoffs. Now, with just four regular season games to play, the wheels have come off for the Impact. They have been overtaken in the Eastern Conference standings and currently sit in fourth place - just three points above the Chicago Fire and one point above the Philadelphia Union. Granted, the Impact have a game in hand on both of those teams, but that game is a midweek fixture in Los Angeles against the two-time defending champion Galaxy, so it is hardly an easy three points. If the Impact are going to make the playoffs in just their second season in MLS, theyll need to do it on home soil. Aside from the trip to LA on October 16, the Impacts remaining games include two at home - next weekend against the New England Revolution and October 19 against the Philadelphia Union - followed by their final league game of the regular season, away to Toronto FC on October 26. They do not want to be in a situation where they need points from the final game of the season in order to make the playoffs, because there is nothing that Toronto would like better than to play spoiler against the Impact. Torontos season has been one filled with disappointment: More upheaval in the front office, more turnover on the roster, more losses piling up and, for the seventh consecutive season, no playoffs for the supporters. Saturdays loss in Philadelphia perfectly summed up TFCs woeful season. They played very well for large stretches of the game with Bright Dikke proving to be a real handful up front, the midfield snapping at Philadelphias heels and the back four looking very composed.ddddddddddddAlthough the game was deadlocked at 0-0, when Fabinho was sent off for Philadelphia in the second half, the advantage swung in Torontos favour. They had numerous opportunities to put the game out of reach, but a combination of poor decision-making and poor finishing saw TFC fail to find the back of the net, which set the game up for a dramatic finish. And what a finish it was. Kleberson curled a delicious free kick into the top corner of Joe Bendiks goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to send the fans at PPL Park in Chester, PA delirious. The Union desperately needed the three points to keep the pressure on Montreal and the goal from Kleberson was a thing of beauty. For Toronto FC fans, all they have left to look forward to is the end of the season comings and goings. While the management team is promising to make a splash by signing two high-priced designated players, TFC fans will know better than to hold their breath. In Vancouver, the Whitecaps playoff hopes are hanging by the thinnest of threads after a 2-2 draw at BC Place with the Portland Timbers. Camilo scored both goals for Vancouver - the second has to be a leading contender for goal of the year in MLS, a stunning side scissor-kick to draw Vancouver level - but the Whitecaps must feel like theyve missed their last chance to drag themselves into the playoff picture. Vancouver sits six points adrift of fifth-place Colorado and their remaining fixture list doesnt make for pretty reading. The Whitecaps travel to Seattle to take on the Sounders on Wednesday (TSN2 10pm et/7pm pt), followed by away and home games with Colorado to end the season. Failure to pick up maximum points from all three games will likely mean the end of Vancouvers season. ' ' '
