CALGARY - Following what some are calling a dream season, Marielle Thompson believes she still has much more to prove. After winning gold in womens ski cross at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, Thompson went on to capture her second Crystal Globe as the overall World Cup champion. It was kind of — people have been saying — the dream season, said Thompson, 22, from Whistler, B.C.Thompson will begin defence of her title this weekend at the season-opening Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup at Nakiska Ski Area outside of Calgary.Im just trying to build on the momentum from last year, she said. Im pretty young and I feel like Im still building on my skiing and improving. While Thompson won World Cup titles in 2012 and again last year, she has set her sights on winning gold at the 2015 world championship in Kreischberg, Austria in late January. She still remembers finishing second behind Swiss skier Fanny Smith at the 2013 worlds in Voss, Norway.I still have things to do, said Thompson, who beat Smith in the final World Cup race of the season last year to capture her second Crystal Globe. It was pretty tight, but I finished with the win. It was pretty exciting because that last final heat, if she beat me, she won the overall and if I beat her, I won the overall.Thompson began her season last year with a World Cup win at Nakiska as she finished ahead of Smith and French veteran Ophelie David.Last year I started off really well with a win at Nakiska, so I hope I can make that happen again, said Thompson, who should be once again challenged by Smith and David. The course was really fun last year and its the same guys building it, so Im sure it will be awesome again. Both the womens and mens qualification runs will take place at Nakiska on Friday.I think I get more nervous for qualifying than for racing because if you dont qualify well, youre not in the races, Thompson said. The top 16 women and top 32 men will move onto Saturdays elimination heats, which will feature four skiers racing each other down a course of jumps and bumps. The top two skiers advance to the next heat while the other two are eliminated.Youve got to just be ready to race and lay it all on the line right away, said Calgarys Brady Leman, 28, who wants to improve on his third-place showing at Nakiska last year. Last year was the dream season for Marielle. It was the season that almost was for me.I made more medal finals than anyone else. I just had a combination of really bad luck and bad performances in the medal finals. That kind of made for a so-so season.Agonizingly, Leman finished just out of the medals in fourth place in Sochi.Every other person in the race will trade you for fourth, but at the same time its like youre the one guy in that round that doesnt get a medal, he said. That really sucks. The unknown aspect of what will happen when four skiers race side-by-side is also what makes ski cross such an exciting sport for fans to watch, Leman said.Everyone has a chance and how good your chance is depends on what youve done and how good of a chance you give yourself in terms of your training and preparation, he said. That also doesnt change that you might just get a pole between your legs or something like that in the first round and your day is over.Being able to race so close to his hometown is an added bonus for Leman. Its super cool for me because its home, he said. Its 45 minutes to an hour from the city. All my friends and family get to come up and watch.Leman added that spectators who make the jaunt out to Nakiska will be impressed with how much theyll be able to see from the bottom of the hill.Theres a great view from the finish at Nakiska, he said. You can see the last jump - which is really big - coming into the straightaway. Theres a big screen at the bottom to show the whole run, so you can look up at the screen and see whats going on and then turn around and see the finish live. Its usually a pretty good atmosphere. Schmidt Peterson Motorsports said Wednesday it has hired Villeneuve to race in this years Indianapolis 500, 19 years after the Canadian driver first drank the milk in Victory Lane. "IndyCar is growing again and thats why last year when I started watching races again, every time I watched I felt almost angry I wasnt there," the 1995 race winner said on a satellite hookup from France during a news conference held at the teams Indy headquarters. At age 42, Villeneuve seemed content being a television analyst, musician and RallyCross driver. But when Schmidt and co-owner Rick Peterson, also from Canada, made a serious offer, he couldnt refuse. The 500 is scheduled for May 25. Villeneuve certainly has a compelling resume. As an Indy rookie in 1994, he qualified fourth and finished second to Al Unser Jr., and was named the races rookie of the year. The next season, the reigning CART rookie of the year was even better. He qualified fifth at Indy, forced Scott Goodyear into a costly mistake on the final restart and eventually held off Christian Fittipaldi to become the first and only Canadian winner of the race. Villeneuve completed all 400 laps at Indy in those two starts and won the 1995 CART title, too. But after starting 33 races, winning six poles and five races in two IndyCar seasons, Villeneuve had a chance to become an international star. So he headed to Europe and joined Formula One -- the series that made his late father, Gilles, a household name. Like his dad, who died in a 1982 F1 qualifying crash, Villeneuve excelled on the world stage. In 163 career starts between 1996 and 2006, the younger Villeneuve reached the podium 23 times, won 11 races, 13 poles and claimed the 1997 world championship. At that point, American open-wheel racing wasnt even on the radar. His journey back to North America began in 2007 when Villeneuve made the move to American stock cars. Over the next seven seasons, he dabbled in Sprint Cup, Natiionwide and Le Mans series as well as sports cars.dddddddddddd Villeneuve regained interest in IndyCars last season as he watched how close and competitive the races had become. To him, it reminded him of the series he left almost two decades earlier. Suddenly, he was interested in making a return -- if he could find the right car and the right team. "To get this opportunity is a gift," Villeneuve said. "A lot of people say when you have kids, you slow down. I want my kids to see me race." Schmidt is the winningest team owner in Indy Lights history and already employs two full-time drivers in the better-known IndyCar series -- Russias Mikhail Aleshin and Frances Simon Pageland. In previous years, Schmidt has always found a way to compete at Indy. Getting Villeneuve might be the biggest coup of all for his low-budget team. "Indy is a special place. We go there not to exist but to win the race," Schmidt said. "To see a guy that finished second and finished first there, I dont think hes going to have any problem going back." Villeneuve becomes the fifth 500 winner on this years entry list. The others are three-time winner Helio Castroneves of Brazil, two-time winner Scott Dixon of New Zealand, 2000 winner Juan Pablo Montoya of Colombia and Brazils Tony Kanaan, the defending champ. Another trip to Victory Lane would give Villeneuve two more milestones. He would break Al Unsers record for the longest gap between first and last victories. Unser went 17 years between his first Indy crown in 1970 and his record-tying fourth win in 1987. Villeneuve also would break Gordon Johncocks record for the longest gap between first and second wins at Indy, 1973 and 1982. Villeneuve isnt motivated by records. He wants to win. "Im a racer," he said, explaining he does not plan to retire anytime soon. "Ive got to find ways to get better and better and better, and Im going there with a team thats very experienced and has been very successful as well."
